As you use your Windows 10 laptop, the battery goes through a number of charges and discharge cycles that slowly wear it down. Calibration isn't for the dead battery sitting in storage; it's for a battery that still works properly, yet doesn't show an accurate reading when it comes to life remaining. For example, it might say that there are two hours of juice left, but after 45 minutes you'll get a warning that it's about to shut down. After calibration, you'll usually get a more accurate reading, and while it may be depressing to see that your old laptop is only getting about an hour of power from a charge, you won't be stuck somewhere with a dead device.

Calibrate the battery manually Manually calibrating the battery requires four steps: fully charge the battery, discharge or drain the battery, recharge the battery, and then run the battery test. Calibrating the battery improves the accuracy of the battery gauge software so that it more accurately displays the current level of charge.

How to calibrate the battery in your laptop

If you're comfortable accessing your PC's BIOS, you might find a battery calibration tool within. This all depends on the laptop and manufacturer, so don't be alarmed if you can't find it.

Likewise, some laptop manufacturers will include a calibration tool within Windows 10 in order to easily take care of the problem. However, this type of tool isn't common, so you must take things into your own hands. Luckily, the process is relatively painless. Here are the steps to get it done, broken down into five separate parts.

Change your power plan

Before going through the hassle of charging and discharging your battery, we must first change the power settings to keep your laptop from sleeping or hibernating too soon. This is intended to be a straight draw on the battery and letting it go into a power-saving mode will ruin the calibration.

  1. Right-click the battery icon in your taskbar.
  2. Click Power Options.

  3. Click Change when the computer sleeps.
  4. Click the dropdown menu next to Turn off the display.

  5. Click Never.
  6. Click the dropdown menu next to Put the computer to sleep.

  7. Click Never.
  8. Click Change advanced power settings.

  9. Click the expand button next to Battery.
  10. Click the expand button next to Critical battery action. Ensure the section next to On battery says Hibernate.

  11. Click the expand button next to Critical battery level.
  12. Click the percentage next to On Battery.

  13. Click the down arrow to set the number as low as possible.
  14. Click Apply.

  15. Click OK.
  16. Click Save changes.

If you don't plan on using the laptop while the battery discharges, ensure you have a screensaver set up.

Charge your battery

Now that the power settings are taken care of, you want to charge your laptop's battery up to 100%. When it's completely charged, leave it plugged in and wait for the battery to cool down. Depending on your laptop and battery, this can take up to a few hours.

Unplug your laptop and let it discharge

Now that your laptop is cooled down and the battery is fully charged, you can unplug the cable. You can use the laptop during this time. Always make sure it doesn't go to sleep or hibernate (at least until the very end), although the power settings you changed should take care of this.

Charge your battery again

Once your laptop's battery is completely drained and the device shuts off, you'll want to plug it back in and let it charge back to 100%. Feel free to use your laptop during this time.

Once you're charged back up to full, your laptop should give you a much more accurate reading of how long the battery will last.

Reset your power plan

Now that your battery is calibrated, be sure to reset your power plan to how you had it before. No sense in wasting battery when the device isn't in use.

No matter how carefully you are using your laptop, after some period of time built-in battery degrades and loses its capacity thus decreasing the total battery life. Sometimes a bit different thing happens. Battery controller reports incorrect data about estimated work time or remaining battery percentage. Although it is not as bad as it may seem, incorrect data from the controller may cause unexpected shutdowns. For example, the battery indicator shows that you have 15% left but in reality, your battery is almost completely drained or vice-versa. If you suffer from similar problems or see unrealistic estimates, you should calibrate a laptop battery. Here is how to do this.

What is Laptop Battery Calibration?

It is a very simple procedure, not rocket science. All you need to do is charge battery, drain it to zero and charge it back again. This does not cause any harm to the battery.

How to Calibrate a Laptop Battery on Windows 10?

This procedure is universal for any laptop or tablet you use no matter which OS is installed. You can calibrate laptop battery on Windows 10 just like you do it on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or even Windows XP. There is no software involved, so no need to download any third-party software. Also, do not believe third-party apps, which promise you to somehow extend your battery lifespan or “calibrate” it. All you need to calibrate laptop battery is the device itself, charger, and a few hours to waste.

How Often Should I Calibrate the Battery of My Laptop?

There is no strict rule. Do it whenever you notice any anomalies with your laptop or one time every two or three months. Especially, if you follow recommendations not to charge the battery up to 100% and not to drain it completely. These practices usually prolong battery lifespan but also require regular calibration.

There is another thing you need to know about calibrating battery in a laptop. Battery calibration won’t cure your dying laptop. It just makes sure the controller reports the correct data. If your laptop barely survives 1 hour without a charger, then you probably should consider replacing the battery or the entire laptop.

How to Calibrate Battery in Laptop?

Plug in your computer to the power source and leave it charging for a few hours. Let it charge one or two hours more even if the battery level is 100%. Thus, you make sure the battery is definitely charged. Let the battery cool down a bit by leaving plugged in computer idling for one more hour.

  1. Disconnect charger from the laptop. Press Win + X and click on Power Options.
  2. Set Screen and Sleep parameters to Never for both modes. You can change these settings later on.
  3. Click on Additional power settings.
  4. Click on Change advanced power settings for the current plan.
  5. Select Change advanced power settings.
  6. Expand Battery list and select Critical battery action. Select Hibernate for both On battery and Plugged in.
  7. Now to go Critical battery level and set the lowest amount possible for both On battery and Plugged in. This parameter may differ depending on which laptop or tablet you are using.
  8. Now let your laptop idle until the battery drains to zero. When the device is dead, plug it to the charger and wait for the battery to gain all 100% of its capacity. Again, you may need to leave it charging for one or two hours more than usual.

After everything is done, the battery controller should be reporting correct values without unexpected capacity jumps or shutdowns.

How to Calibrate MacBook Pro Battery?

  2. Open Energy Saver and select Battery tab.
